In 2003 the bfi presented a major celebration of the work of Luchino Visconti, an extraordinary film-maker whose work has had a considerable impact on world cinema. The year saw the theatrical releases of Death in Venice and The Leopard, a major retrospective at the National Film Theatre and Edinburgh Filmhouse with highlights touring cinemas across the UK, a new edition of Geoffrey Nowell-Smith's monograph on Visconti, DVD releases of Ossessione and La terra trema and a new documentary from BBC Arena. The Leopard is now available on DVD.
