MEDIA Programme funding

The MEDIA Programme (often referred to as MEDIA) is the European Union’s funding programme for the audiovisual industry. MEDIA has a budget of €755m for 2007-2013 and currently comprises 18 funding schemes offering non-repayable grants to producers, distributors, sales agents, organisers of training courses, operators in new digital technologies, operators of VoD platforms, exhibitors and organisers of festivals, markets and promotional events.

The BFI is host to MEDIA Desk UK, the UK’s information and promotion office for MEDIA. The MEDIA Desk UK team answer enquiries about funding schemes, help prepare applications and encourage participation in the many MEDIA-supported training courses, festivals and markets that take place across Europe.

In 2011, UK companies were awarded over €7.4m in MEDIA grants, and UK films received over €6.8m for their distribution in other EU countries. Recently-funded UK projects include Ken Loach’s The Angels’ Share, the Mark Cousins-narrated The Story of Film: An Odyssey, the 2012 edition of BRITDOC’s Good Pitch, the 2012 Bristol Encounters International Film Festival and Edinburgh Napier University’s ENGAGE training course.
