An avant-garde film based on two stories by Poe. A man goes to visit his old friend Roderick Usher and his young wife Madeleine. When he arrives he finds Roderick obsessively painting a portrait of Madeleine, although she is very ill. When Madeleine dies Roderick tries to prevent her burial. Eventually she is interred in a nearby grotto and Roderick becomes agitated and his senses heightened. During a thunderstorm the chateau is struck by lightning and catches fire, and Madeleine returns to lead Roderick and his friend to safety.
