Conrack (1974)

Film details

Synopsis

Drama based on events in the life of author Pat Conroy. In March 1969, Conroy arrives on an island off South Carolina to take up his post as the new schoolteacher. The school is just one room, with pupils of mixed ages, and all poor and black, and at the outset they do not even know what country they live in. Unable to pronounce Conroy, everyone on the island calls him Conrack. His lively and unorthodox teaching methods bring them levels of knowledge about life, the world, history and art which they never suspected existed, but his methods fall foul of the local school inspector Mr Skeffington, who warns Conroy that if he carries on he will face the sack.
