One of the few films starring Penelope Dudley-Ward (her 1946 marriage to Carol Reed cut short her career), this Terence Rattigan-scripted comedy teams her with Michael Wilding, whose lovelorn butler cannot cross the class barrier until he becomes an army officer. An amusing jaunt is enlivened by Dudley-Ward’s portrayal of a vivacious ‘lady’ who, in joining the Auxiliary Territorial Service, finds herself in service to her pompous ex-servant and paramour.
