Knock on Any Door (1949)

Film details

Synopsis

Nick Romano, a young crook on trial for the murder of a policeman during a robbery pleads innocent and is defended by lawyer Andrew Morton, who comes from a similar background to Romano. However, the prosecutor touches on a nerve when he questions Romano about the reason for his pregnant wife's suicide, which was caused by Romano's return to a life of crime. Romano cracks and confesses. Morton then tries to bring in numerous extenuating circumstances in an attempt to save his life, citing the violence and misery of his childhood in the slums without a father. Romano is found guilty and sentenced to the electric chair.
