Introduction

Based on a play by Clemence Dane (who also co-wrote the screenplay), Korda’s movie, made towards the end of the war with victory in sight, reveals the transformative powers of conscription.

Kerr and Donat play a couple who reassess their marriage – and the dreary pre-war drudges they once were – having separately become vigorous, purposeful (and attractive!) members of the armed forces.
