1923. Moscow is plagued by violence and theft from street children orphaned by World War I, the Russian Revolution and the Civil War. The film depicts the work of Soviet agencies in bringing them back into society. Based on the autobiographical writings of Soviet educationalist Anton Makarenko.

Reissued in 1957 in a new sound version, overseen by Ekk and Stollyar, and re-edited to 2617m (instead of 3330m). New version first screened May 10th 1957.
