Synopsis

Set in Japan during the Meiji period (1868-1912) and based on the novel by Tomita Tsuneo. The fictional characters Sugata Sanshiro and Yano are loosely modeled on real persons, Saigo Shiro who was recruited by Kano Jigoro in 1882. They established judo as a superior hand to hand fighting style to jujitsu. Sugata Sanshiro comes to the city to be apprenticed at a jujitsu school. He sees Yano, a master of judo and begs to be his student. He also wants to win the hand of Sayo, daughter of an old jujitsu teacher. To do so he has to defeat Gennosuke Higaki, a master of jujitsu who also seeks her hand. While learning the techniques of judo he has to achieve "satori", the Buddhist ideal of enlightenment that comes with realising and accepting the law of nature.
