I, Claudius Episode 7 Reign of Terror (1976)

Film details

Synopsis

Tiberius's reign continues in a climate of fear, with constant arrests. Livilla continues a passionate affair with Sejanus and longs to be married to him. However, Tiberius refuses to allow it, but suggests Sejanus marry Livilla's young daughter Helen instead. Livilla is furious at the suggestion and shortly afterwards Helen falls ill. Antonia suspects that Livilla has a hand in Helen's illness, reinforced when Claudius tells her of Livilla's true part in Postumus's banishment. Impatient at not seeing Sejanus for some time Livilla writes to him, but leaves incriminating drafts in amongst the rubbish which Antonia discovers. In the letter she refers to their plot to kill her husband Castor and marry, and also hints at killing Tiberius. Antonia is horrified and uses Claudius to carry the evidence past Sejanus to Tiberius, hidden in Claudius's new book. Antonia locks Livilla in her room and starves her to death. Claudius tries to warn Caligula from going to Tiberius at Capri, but Caligula has nothing to worry about knowing how to manipulate his great uncle by pandering to his baser tastes. Tiberius and Caligula draw up a list of names for execution of those they believe supporters or family of Sejanus. Sejanus's children are killed as are hundreds of others in Rome.
