What Money Can Buy (1929)

Film details

Synopsis

A melodrama based on the theme that money is not omnipotent in the purchase of human souls. In the film the object of the experiment is a girl discharged from prison and ready to take any job to make a living. A rogue makes a bet that his money can buy her. He gets her a job as a mannequin, spends pounds on having her beautified and dressed, then invites her to a wild party at his house with the intention of simultaneously gratifying his own desires and giving his wife evidence for divorce. But the victim does not fall, and in a struggle, the man falls over the balcony and is killed in such a circumstance as to implicate the girl on a possible charge of murder. The girl takes sanctuary with a priest who swears to a white lie to prove an alibi and in consequence sacrifices his career in the Church.
