Written on the Wind (1956)

Hudson and Bacall star in Sirk’s melodrama about a Texan oil dynasty.

Film details

Introduction

Sirk’s deliriously bold melodrama about a Texan oil dynasty troubled by a tearaway generation was an antecedent to TV’s Dallas. Crucially, the deepest sympathies are extended not to the ‘respectable’ outsiders (Hudson, Bacall) but to their volatile, love-hungry counterparts in the family (Stack, Malone). Sublime camerawork by Russell Metty.
