Synopsis

The rebellious son of a duke refuses to propose marriage to a brewery heiress, as his parents have planned, and, visiting one of his father's regular haunts, befriends Ada, an Irish human cannonball in a theatre act. They conspire to pretend to elope so that his parents will want to call off the planned marriage, but their trip to Paris does not go to plan, as they are not spotted by the crucial parties and then Paris falls under siege as th Prussian forces surround it. They suffer through the winter's siege and finally return to London, where, as the parents try to convince Ada that no happiness can come of their union, matters come to a head.
