Divine Horsemen: The Living Gods of Haiti (1977)

Maya Deren's radical techniques immerse the viewer in the euphoria of Vodou rituals and rites.
Between 1947 and 1954, Deren visited Haiti multiple times, fascinated by the power and majesty of Vodou rituals and rites. She experimented with innovative ways of capturing them with her camera, pioneering radical new techniques that promised to immerse the viewer in the euphoria of Vodou ritual dance. Sadly, Deren passed away before she assembled her groundbreaking footage, but thankfully we can enjoy the edit crafted by her widow Teiji Ito some years later.
