Synopsis

Comedy, based on the television series. In a black and white prologue set during the Second World War, Bob Ferris and Terry Collier are both conceived during a German air raid. In the present day (1970s, now in colour) Bob and Terry are friends. Bob is married to Thelma. Terry is a womanising bachelor. They watch the demolition of the pub in the streets where they grew up, The Fat Ox, and Bob starts questioning the achievements and the direction of his life. This is compounded by the fact that Terry seems to be settling down somewhat with his new Finnish girlfriend, Christina, and is less interested in going out. Thelma and Christina suggest that the four of them take a long weekend to go on a caravan tour of Northumbria. This does not go well. Terry and Christina rethink their relationship. Bob sinks deeper into introspection and, as he stays at Terry's, he and Thelma begin to mistrust each other's fidelity. Eventually, Terry decides to leave Britain and spend a while working on a cargo ship. He and Bob have a drink on board the ship the night before she sails, but this does not end up happily for them both.
