A couple, while redecorating their San Francisco apartment, discover a message written in lipstick under layers of wallpaper. Having been written by a 1920s jazz age flapper called Maxie Malone, who died in a car crash in 1927, the ghost of the flapper returns to inhabit the body of the young wife who resembles her. Enjoying her time while possessing the body of the wife, Maxie persuades the couple to let her possess the wife's body in an attempt to be a success in the movies, something she had failed to achieve in the 1920s owing to her untimely death.
