Introduction

All the world’s a stage in Rainer Werner Fassbinder’s documentary about the 1981 World Theatre Festival in Cologne, an immersive montage of avant-garde performances (including some electrifying scenes from Pina Bausch’s ‘Kontakthof’) combined with Fassbinder’s voice-over readings from the cultural theories of Antonin Artaud. Theatre is seen as a vital form of protest – a way of extending the frontiers of reality.
