Personal view by Howard Jacobson of how English is spoken, defending and making a call for the return of standard English in the face of what he sees as a sentimental attachment to regional accents and dialects. He begins to try to shake off his own Lancashire accent with the help of the National Theatre dialect coach, and visits schools and watches classes of 11 year olds learning English according to the new national curriculum, with which he takes issue. He also considers rap groups and newer English voices to see if they are invigorating the language or not.
