Considers whether all human languages from English and Chinese to Tlinglit (an American Indian language) and Awyu-Dumat (spoken by some New Guinea islanders) share a common ancestry. Examines recent findings by linguists, archaeologists and geneticists that have established links between the world's 5,000 languages and made it possible to discover 20 or more words that may have been spoken by the first humans.
