Synopsis

After coming across a village pillaged and slaughtered by a roving French company led by the feared Brigadier Loup Sharpe makes an enemy of the Brigadier when he orders two captured Frenchmen shot. Back at camp, Sharpe is given the task of preparing the glamorous Royal Irish Company from the court of the Spanish Kingl for their first ever battle. Sharpe has his work cut out as the company have previously only been used for royal ceremonial duties and he clashes with their leader Lord Kiely who is intent on glory. Sharpe is instructed to make their lives a misery with some strict training in the hopes of making them desert and they are deliberately based close to the French lines. The arrival of a supposed partisan leader Juanita causes problems as Lord Kiely begins an affair with her, snubbing his wife whom he sleights because she had a miscarriage. False reports of a massacre in Ireland by the English causes trouble in the ranks. Lady Kiely seeks Sharpe's help regarding her husband and when Kiely learns that she is pregnant he cools towards Juanita. Juanita is a French spy who tells Loup of plans to attack his base and who corrupts O'Rourke and other men from the Irish company to kidnap Lady Kiely and take her to Loup. Kiely is then blackmailed into not coming to Sharpe's aid during the attack. However, Kiely kills Juanita and eventually leads his men to the defence of Sharpe's men and successfully reaches his wife, although he is killed by Loup. Sharpe and Loup fight with Sharpe killing Loup. However, during the fighting Perkins has been killed by O'Rourke.
