Film details

Synopsis

Colonel Leroux, one of Napoleon's best spies is on a mission to capture Wellington's master spy "El Mirador", whose identity he discovers after torturing a priest, who is El Mirador's confessor, and two nuns. During a skirmish with Sharpe and his men he shoots a French captain in the back and swaps coats with him claiming that the colonel has been killed and has left him his magnificent and expensive Kligenthal sword. Sharpe is suspicious of him and does not believe his story. The other officers accept his story and his parole. During the skirmish Sharpe also discovers the terrified "Lass", a young nun who escaped from Leroux's earlier murder of her fellow travelling companions. She is still in shock and does not speak but clings to Sharpe and does not leave him. Sharpe meets and becomes friendly with the one-armed Lord Jack Spears, one of Nairn's men. Sharpe tries to prove the French Captain is a spy and not who he seems, but fails to convince Berkeley. Leroux escapes, killing the young Ensign McDonald and heads into the French fort. Sharpe's old adversary Sir Henry Simmerson appears, now holding a political position in the area. Sharpe and his men lodge at a mission run by the Irish priest Father Curtis, who recognises "Lass", but she rejects the Church and still clings to Sharpe. During an attack on the fort Sharpe is seriously wounded in the shoulder and stomach. Berkeley is also killed, and it turns out that Simmerson informed the French of the attack in advance. Harper, Ramona and Lass descend into the dying rooms to find and nurse Sharpe back to health. Father Curtis manages to break the dangerous fever Sharpe develops and gives Harper an old sword, which Harper makes into a new one. Meanwhile, Harris decodes the paper first found on Leroux, which reveals that Spears has been passing on information to the French. Sharpe gives Spears the chance to redeem himself by leading a suicidal charge on the French fort. The South Essex advance and succeed in capturing the fort. Sharpe and Leroux fight a duel to the death and Father Curtis turns out to be "El Mirador", who marries Harper and Ramona when the former believes he is dying.
