Synopsis

Comedy set in 1780 at the Versailles court of Louis XVI, where fortunes are made or lost on the strength of a well-turned witticism. The story of a well-born but penniless, provincial engineer who visits the palace to find backing for an idealistic drainage scheme, and finds himself drawn into court intrigue and personal compromise.
