Synopsis

Since 1970, Chino, California, state prison for men has run an arduous ten month training programme in commercial diving. Film follows six inmates among the initial course intake of 65 - many of whom can barely read (or swim). Those who succeed have the opportunity to go on to lucrative jobs, mostly on oil rigs. Last section shows them on parole, reuniting with their families and taking up their jobs. Only five per cent of Chino ex-prisoners return to institutional life, compared with 63 per cent in the overall US prison population.
