Synopsis

Last in the series looking at early filmmaking in Europe. This programme investigates the arrival of sound on the European film industry and considers some of the different early attempts at sound and sound systems. It also looks at the effect of the coming of sound on the careers of many silent screen actors and actresses and cinema musicians. Other aspects considered include: the production of the same film in several languages (sometimes with different endings for different countries); the failure of Abel Gance's attempt at a sound film; the effects of the rise of Nazism in Germany and the emigration of many top quality Jewish producers and directors.
