Synopsis

Seventh part of this nine part drama about four friends. It is now 1984 and the miners' strike is dominating the lives of the friends. Mary as leader of the council is supporting the miners but her son, Anthony a policeman finds himself on the frontline. Eddie and Nicky are investigating local businessmen's involvement in breaking the strike and at the same time Tosker is doing deals with these men. At first there is no trouble, but when large numbers of police from the London Met are brought in and there is an attempt by scab workers to enter the pit, violence ensues. Anthony is disturbed by some of the things he sees done to the miners, and requests to be taken off policing the strikers, in spite of the threatened damage to his career prospects. Nicky is in demand as a photo journalist and takes photos of the riot on the picket line, being injured by a policeman in the process. Mary tends to his injuries and they end up sleeping together. Mary offers to defend some of the miners charged with riot free of charge and wants Anthony to testify against the police and on behalf of the miners over the violence. His decision to turn up at the court leads to a decision by the prosecution to lessen the charges against the miners so he does not have to testify. Florrie and Felix are in danger of being attacked and are frequently pestered and annoyed by local youths. When he goes to complain to one of the youth's family, Felix is viciously attacked by the man and his rottweiler and so badly beaten that he ends up in hospital. Nicky arranges for his mother to move to a bungalow but when he comes out of hospital it is clear that the attack has added to Felix's deterioration and accelerates the senility that had begun to appear before the attack. Tosker is happy in his new life with Elaine but he is moving further away from his old life. His acquaintance with members of the business community leads to his joining the Masons. All of the friends have lost touch with Geordie.
