The Tenant of Wildfell Hall Part 2 (1996)

Film details

Synopsis

Helen gives Gilbert Markham her diary in order that he should know about her life and background. The diary reveals her falling in love with the rakish Huntingdon at the age of 18 and agreeing to marry him in spite of her Aunt's warnings and disapproval of him. After they are married he reveals his profligacy - mentioning previous affairs and soon falling back into a life of drinking, gambling and dissipation. He goes up to London often, leaving Helen alone in their country home. When he does return he is often inconsiderate and unkind towards her. She bears a son and has to endure the frequent visits of the rowdy associates of her husband and the presence of Annabelle, with whom she suspects her husband is too familiar. When she sees her husband and Annabelle in the garden together, she confronts him and wishes to leave with her child. However, he becomes violent with her and refuses to countenance such a thing. Whilst still reading the diary a coach rattles by Gilbert's window en route to Wildfell Hall. From an upstairs window Helen, to her horror, sees her son Arthur being lured into this coach and abducted before she can get outside.
