Healthy Baby Girl (1997)

Film details

Synopsis

Documentary. Filmmaker Judith Helfand investigates the drug diethylstilbestrol (DES) which was banned in 1971 in the US after establishing links between it and cancer. The drug was orginally prescribed to pregnant women to prevent miscarriages. Judith Helfand's contention is that the pharmaceutical companies knew as early as the 1940s that the drug was ineffective and also that it may cause cancer in babies born to those who had taken the drug. Helfand's own mother had taken the drug and Helfand herself was later diagnosed with cervical cancer.
