Deadly Summer (1997)

Film details

Synopsis

Televison film. A black comedy drama about two British families who set off for a summer holiday in Burgundy. The two husbands - the pompous Donald Harcourt and the social-climber Jim Topping - arrange the holiday and their wives and children are brought along reluctantly. Class consciousness and snobbery at first seem to divide the two wives, Linda and Celia, but their respective son and daughter end up getting on very well eventually. As the holiday progresses however, the women find they have more in common, namely disappointing husbands with annoying attitudes and treatment of them. Linda responds to the amorous advances of Régis and has an affair with him, and, irritated at being made to cycle to a boules tournament by Donald, Celia throws a boule which hits him on the head and accidentally kills him. Celia confides in Linda and the two decide to try to cover up the murder. However, the local village gossips get to work and Jim is suspected. This puts him at the mercy of the two women, who are his only chance of being smuggled out of the country, a situation which Linda uses to the full.
