The fifth programme in a ten-part series telling the story of the twelve men and one woman who witnesses the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Tells the story of St Matthew, the patron saint of bankers, and reputed author the first Gospel. Begins in Galilee, where he worked as a tax collector, despised by the society in which he lived, and visits churches in the City of London to see how they are responding to the challenge of taking the Christian message to the business world. Also visits Nashville to see how the Bible is studied and used in the so-called "buckle of the Bible belt", and asks how and why the Gospels were written and whether they were always revered as holy writ. Also examines how different Christianity might have been if, like the first Apostles, its later followers had to continue to spread it only though the spoken word.
