It's a little-known fact that Hollywood's number one action hero began his assault on superstardom in the UK. It was in North London in 1967, under the watchful eye of host Jimmy Savile, that Schwarzenegger first won the 'Mr Universe' competition that propelled him to fame. This biography tells of the phenomenal rise of the world's most famous muscle man: from Austrian village to Hollywood Hills, via Forest Gate, East London. Wag and Dianne Bennett, an East End couple who gave Arnie a home for three years, tell how they helped him learn English, lose his dodgy Austrian clothes (although not the accent) and perfect his body. With their help Schwarzenegger conquered Britain and then set his sights on the USA; first Mr Olympia, then Hollywood action hero and now, it appears, Republican politician. The programme also explores how Arnie's unblemished image was undermined by sordid tabloid revelations just as his political ambitions became public. (C4 Press)
