In the Realms of the Unreal (2003)

Film details

Documentary. After running away from an Illinois asylum, to which he was committed as a child in the 1930s, Henry Darger rented a small apartment in Chicago, where he lived until his death in 1971. Working in a variety of low-paid jobs during the day, Darger wrote and painted at night. His work was discovered after his death and he is now recognised as one of the foremost exponents of 'outsider art'. Former neighbours are interviewed about this extremely reclusive figure, and extracts from his writings are read out and examples of his many paintings shown in the course of the film.
