In the Heart of the Sea (2015)

Film details

Synopsis

Maritime drama. The writer Herman Melville arrives in Nantucket desperate to uncover the true story behind a nautical myth of which only one survivor remains: Thomas Nickerson. At first refusing to tell Melville his story, Nickerson relents when his wife persuades him that finally letting go of the dark secrets of his past will do him good. He tells Melville that three decades earlier, in the winter of 1820, when he was 14 years old, he was aboard the New England whaling ship the Essex when it was rammed and sunk by an angry white sperm whale of enormous proportions. Stranded in the South Pacific thousands of miles from the mainland, the surviving crew struggled for survival and realised that drastic measures were alone going to keep them alive. Stirred by Nickerson's courage in living through such hardship and in telling his tale, Melville sets his mind to writing a novel inspired by the epic whaling ship tragedy, the result being his masterpiece, 'Moby-Dick: Or, The Whale'.
