Hamlet on Film: To Be or Not to Be?

How important is the original text when adapting Shakespeare? In a specially made video essay, we investigate how different cinematic adaptations of Hamlet have chopped and changed the Bard’s play to dramatic effect. The video includes clips from Laurence Olivier’s 1948 Hamlet and Kenneth Branagh’s 1996 version, alongside Aki Kaurismäki’s Hamlet Goes Business (1987).
