After Wolfenden: LGBT lives on UK screens

In 1957 the Wolfenden Report recommended that male homosexuality be partially decriminalised in England and Wales. Ten years later, the Sexual Offences Act made the recommendations law. Simon McCallum, programmer of the BFI’s Gross Indecency season, looks at representations of LGBT lives on screen in the intervening years and beyond, from early TV play South (1959) and gay biker drama The Leather Boys (1964) to rare trans stories like I Want What I Want (1971) and Britain’s first explicitly gay feature, Nighthawks (1978).
