American Film Institute - Silent Film Catalogue
Part of the American Film Institute website, the online AFI catalogue of silent film contains over 25,000 entries for silent American films from 1893 - 1930. Search options are extensive and include title, name, subject, genre and company. Entries hold release date and production dates, detailed summaries of films, plus occasional extra notes on film production and bibliographic sources. Also provides video and DVD availability information.
Arts on Film Archive
Arts on Film Archive, developed at the School of Media Arts and Design of the University of Westminster, offers on-line access to a large range of films on art, produced in the United Kingdom since the 1950s. The website presents a complete database of and on-line video streaming of all 450 films made by the film department of Arts Council England between 1953 and 1998 and several films produced till 2003 by the dance Department of ACE.

British Film Resource
This impressive, wide ranging site considers the history of British film from various conceptual viewpoints. eg 'The Pioneers', the 'US invasion' and 'World War II'. The detailed, theoretical articles/essays relate to the first 100 years of British film. 'From James Bond to J Arthur Rank ...if it happened in or around a British Studio during the last century we're interested in it.' Site roughly covers 1890 - 1980s and considers directors such as Alfred Hitchcock, Stanley Kubrick and David Lean, plus studios(eg Rank and Ealing), and provides profiles of stars from Charles Laughton to Ewan MacGregor. Tone of information is thorough and academic in perspective.

Search by title, director, genre, plot synopsis, key cast, year, production company or sales agent.
British Transport Films
Website dedicated to British Transport Films' production unit. Contains alphabetical list of films, plus film details, film reviews and images from the BTF stills collection. Subject area extends beyond railways to include all transport. Can join BTF forum for free exchange of information, resources and reviews. Compilation of BTF classics available on home video.
Cinovid
'Cinovid is an internet database for experimental film and video art.' The international database of over 7,000 avant-garde titles can be searched by title or artist, or via country, format and keyword. Sources of the data include a number of film art institutions such as Canyon Cinema, Light Cone Paris and Video Data Bank Chicago. Each entry includes brief credits and a detailed synopsis. Distribution details are provided on receipt of email.

Dead or Alive
Useful, if slightly macabre, site listing 'famous people' and noting whether they are alive or have passed away. Cut off date for recording deaths is 50 years from present. Site has helpful Instructions and Criteria pages to explain how to use and inclusion policy employed. Names are arranged alphabetically but search options include individual name and 'field'. 'Entertainment' has largest database of well over 3000 names. Each entry is brief but includes career highlights and birth date. Users can provide names for database, but final decision rests with the editor.

Maintained by the Finnish Film Archive, this is a database of films shown or distributed in Finland. Comprehensive information on Finnish films and filmmakers and some information about other films shown in the country. English language option.

Started in 1980 by Kevin Lyons, the database covers science fiction, horror, fantasy and animation in cinema and television from the very beginnings to date. Title details can include: formats, aspect ratios, credits, summary, capsule review, availability, awards, timeline, alternative titles, links, article references, keywords etc. Find titles through the useful search facility.
European Cinema On-Line Database

Site of detailed but selected and 'opinionated' obituaries on a range of individuals, including those who have had careers in film and tv, eg Billy Wilder and George C Scott. Includes a list of sources and links to similar sites. Obituaries divided into quarterly periods, individuals covered are listed and text can be directly accessed.
Greatest Film Site
Extensive site focusing on Classic Hollywood/American films. Holds detailed synopses with numerous dialogue segments and reviews of 200 'Greatest Films'. Also holds various lists from Internet sites, US and UK magazines, organisations (including the BFI) of 100 best films. Irish Film & TV Research Online
Irish Film & TV Research Online incorporates three searchable databases: Irish Film & Television Index; Irish Film & Television Biographies; and Irish Film & Television Bibliography. It also presents information about the Irish Postgraduate Film Research Seminar, an annual conference of film studies' postgraduate students based in Ireland or engaged in researching Irish material elsewhere.
