Artifact Directory
Part of the Resource Discovery Network, a gateway to Internet resources for the education community. Artifact focuses on all arts-related subjects providing an alphabetical annotated directory of relevant websites. The Communication Media file contains sections on Broadcast Media and Film & Video. The latter holds an impressive list of sites including those dedicated to filmmakers, online magazines and archives. Descriptions are clear and a keyword search option is provided, as is a data criteria filter eg. arts projects, catalogues, teaching materials. Highly useful resource tool for research and media information.
Arts and Humanities Research Board
Site of the Arts and Humanities Research Board, which provides funding and support in three programmes: advanced research; postgraduate research and training. Also provides special funding for museums and libraries. Can search by subject e.g. 'film', for details of awards and relevant contacts.

Film & Sound Online
Accessed via the many educational institutions which presently subscribe to this service, Film & Sound Online is a searchable online database of hundreds of hours of film and sound with associate descriptions. Seventeen collections are available for download either in full or in segments for academic use. Databases include the Anglia Television Library, Educational and Television Films Ltd, Films of Scotland (which holds documentaries on a wide range of topics), and a substantial selection from the Imperial War Museum. Site includes a list of titles in each collection and news/events on the host Edina, which provides 'national online services for education and research'.
Film Industry Research Group (FIRG)
Among the papers published in the Business School of the University of Hertfordshire are those by the Film Industry Research Group (FIRG) whose papers cover a range of subject areas such as Employment, Networks and Markets. Published papers have included ‘Identity Work: Film Production in Offshore Europe’ and 'From Hollywood to Borehamwood: Exploring nepotism and networking in US and UK freelance film careers’.
Film Literature Index
FLI - Film Literature Index - indexes annually '150 film and television periodicals from 30 countries, cover to cover', plus selected articles on media from 200 further periodicals. Available online from November 2004 (fully available from January 2005), the time period covered is 1976 - 2001. Search options includes keyword, production title, person, phrase and Boolean operators. Plus helpful advanced searching filters. Useful research tool for finding relevant article references, but note that the full text/abstracts of articles are not provided.
H-Net. Humanities and Social Sciences Net Online
Forum for 'academic historians to discuss cinema history and uses of the media'. Enables historians to make contact internationally, discuss teaching methods, and also have access to syllabi, handouts, bibliographies, table of contents of journals, library catalogues etc. Based at the University of Michigan, the content is divided by subject, eg Collections and H-Film Reviews which provide full text reviews of film publications. Also festival information and web links. Subscription necessary but free.

Provides access to a series of Internet resource catalogues selected by specialists within UK academia. Using search option for 'film', site lists detailed entries for associations, archives, production companies, film and video library catalogues etc.

ScreenSite facilitates the teaching and research of film/TV/new media and is designed principally for educators and students. Sponsored by the University of Alabama et al, site is dedicated to collecting links and resources concerned with the study of film. Also offers interactive discussions onsite. Divided into various areas including Education, Research, Production and Publications. Also has Forum and FAQ sections. US focused.
