These study guides, produced by the BFI National Library, are for anyone studying the media, to help in identifying possible starting points for research. Key writings in books, periodicals and newspapers are listed, together with brief annotations.- Artifact Directory
- Part of the Resource Discovery Network, a gateway to Internet resources for the education community. Artifact focuses on all arts-related subjects providing an alphabetical annotated directory of relevant websites. The Communication Media file contains sections on Broadcast Media and Film & Video. The latter holds an impressive list of sites including those dedicated to filmmakers, online magazines and archives. Descriptions are clear and a keyword search option is provided, as is a data criteria filter eg. arts projects, catalogues, teaching materials. Highly useful resource tool for research and media information.

- European Graduate School
- Aimed at highly motivated students of film who already have a current career or profession, the school uses both American and European educational programmes within the syllabus. Located in Wallis, Switzerland, classes are conducted in English and taught at MA and PhD level. EGS specialises in the philosophy of media and communication, also considering other related areas such as cultural studies, literary theory and psychology.

- International listing of film schools, with contact details, web addresses and basic course information. Information organised alphabetically by country.
- First Light Movies
- Site dedicated to inspiring young people to make their own short films. Aimed at those between five and eighteen, site includes resource, filmmaking, funding and news sections. Each contain useful information, training, guidance and contacts. Plus a 'Screening Room' for three films produced by First Light.
- Floodlight
- The Floodlight course finder allows you to search for London-based courses by subject (such as acting, film studies, scriptwriting, and television) and then by location (South London, Central London etc.) and days and times (daytime courses, evening courses, Mondays, Saturdays etc.). Provides contact details for the institutions that run the courses, as well as other information such as disability access.
- Focal
- The first European web site dedicated to audiovisual and multimedia training for working professionals. Contains a training centres database as well as an on-line forum about writing, short films and training. In English, German and French.
- Horror Film Compendium
- Impressive, lively Horror site aimed at school children and containing extensive information, well organized and accessible. Main database of horror films, with international scope, runs from 1922 to date. High majority of titles link to page of main credits and chatty, but informed commentary. Interesting feature is the use of over 60 brief descriptive slots at end of review, eg. Bad Title, Fake Scare, Excessive Gore, and the allocation of 'skulls' to selected categories, showing how different films use similar devices. Other available data includes titles listed alphabetically, a directors and writers listing, plus arrangement by genre (eg, Alien, Demon) and by weapon used in film. Each listing includes a helpful overview. Well researched, considered site, often comic, and intelligently aimed at inspiring youngsters to explore the genre.
- Long Road Media
- Site holds examples of video work 'produced by students taking Media Studies and/or Film Studies at A-Level'. All work is shot on mini-DV. Material includes music videos, advertising campaigns, short films and TV title sequences. Other sections include option for critical feedback, media course information, educational outlines, links and internet connections to reviews of a selection of British films.

Resources for teachers, students and anyone else who is interested in media and moving image education in primary, secondary, further and informal education. Includes information and teaching materials, an online discussion forum, a diary of media education events, links and a mailing list.- Metro Magazine - Study Guides
- Multi platform educational Australian site which produces downloadable study guides on feature films, documentaries and companies, including 20th Century Fox, Columbia Tri-Star and UIP. There are also over 100 back issues of guides which cover films from both Hollywood and Australia. Plus details of film journals Australian Screen Education and Metro Magazine which can be purchased or subscribed to online.
- ScreenSite
- ScreenSite facilitates the teaching and research of film/TV/new media and is designed principally for educators and students. Sponsored by the University of Alabama et al, site is dedicated to collecting links and resources concerned with the study of film. Also offers interactive discussions onsite. Divided into various areas including Education, Research, Production and Publications. Also has Forum and FAQ sections. US focused.
- Spark Notes
- Site of various multifaceted study guides of prominent films which can be downloaded for free. The Guides are listed alphabetically, include the Godfather Trilogy, Birth of a Nation and The Matrix and each is aligned to a message board. A contents list for each guide is provided and covers 'Context', 'Plot Overview', 'Theme' and 'Analysis of Major Characters'. Site also offers suggestions for further study, a FAQ section, an option to purchase study publications and online tests on the texts lists.
- Study Media
- Designed specifically for AS and A2 Media Studies students, but will also be applicable to anyone interested in analysing the media. The site does not consider individual media (e.g. film, television separately, but focuses on aspects of communication which each employs or can be applied generally (e.g. genre, narrative, written text, the concept of news). Includes brief but critical outlines plus pertinent questions to ensure students will gain a thoughtful overview of how the multifaceted media operates and functions.
