Animation - MakeMovies
Site aimed mainly at teachers of animation. Includes online 'lessons' on animation, creating characters and teaching animation in the schoolroom. Holds advice on materials, drawing aids, equipment, drawing exercises etc.
Artifact Directory
Part of the Resource Discovery Network, a gateway to Internet resources for the education community. Artifact focuses on all arts-related subjects providing an alphabetical annotated directory of relevant websites. The Communication Media file contains sections on Broadcast Media and Film & Video. The latter holds an impressive list of sites including those dedicated to filmmakers, online magazines and archives. Descriptions are clear and a keyword search option is provided, as is a data criteria filter eg. arts projects, catalogues, teaching materials. Highly useful resource tool for research and media information.
ATOM Education Shop Online
Part of Australia's Metro Magazine site, the ATOM (Australian Teachers of Media) online shop has sections on 'Film as Text' articles for teachers and students, Australian Screen Education articles, and Metro magazine articles. All can be downloaded with Acrobat. Subjects include interviews with filmmakers, making documentaries with young people and analytic film reviews.
BBC Learning Studies
Search by keyword and subject in a database of over 5,000 titles from BBC programmes including Panorama, Horizon, QED, Inside Story, Arena and Wildlife on One. The tapes come with a full licence for use in education and training. Each tape costs £125 (2003) but catalogue is also a useful resource for research purposes.
BUFVC - Off Air Recording Service
The BUFVC (British Universities Film and Video Council) offers a television recording back-up service for UK universities and colleges. Any educational establishment holding an ERA license for off-air recording can utilise this service by taking out BUFVC membership.
Educational Recording Agency
Site of Educational Recording Agency which provide a license enabling educational establishments to record television and radio broadcasts - except Open University programmes which are licensed separately. Site provides legal information, details of ERA membership and conditions of the licensing scheme.
English and Media Centre
Site of English and Media Centre, based in London, dedicated to teachers of English and media in schools. Holds useful information on publications/video packs on drama, literature and media subjects - divided by age and genre. Also provides teaching material, which can be downloaded, courses for teachers and lists of websites for pupils, parents and teachers.
Film Education
Film Education aims to encourage and promote the study of film and cinema in the UK National Curriculum. Free resources include downloadable study guides for primary and secondary education, and various digital resources that can be ordered by teachers and schools. Site also contains details of Film Education events, and useful links.
MeCCSA
MeCCSA (Media, Communications, and Cultural Studies Association) represents the field of media, communication and cultural studies in the UK. Website contains details and links to the Women's Media Studies Network, and the Postgraduate Network as well as news, discussions and links.
Media Literacy Online Project
Well known site which aims to provide a support service to media teachers globally. Much of the content has North American emphasis, but has good links and recommended media education sites and subject bibliographies.
MediaEd - The UK Media Education Website
BFI siteResources for teachers, students and anyone else who is interested in media and moving image education in primary, secondary, further and informal education. Includes information and teaching materials, an online discussion forum, a diary of media education events, links and a mailing list.
Metro Magazine - Study Guides
Multi platform educational Australian site which produces downloadable study guides on feature films, documentaries and companies, including 20th Century Fox, Columbia Tri-Star and UIP. There are also over 100 back issues of guides which cover films from both Hollywood and Australia. Plus details of film journals Australian Screen Education and Metro Magazine which can be purchased or subscribed to online.
Moving Image Gateway
Site compiled by the British University Film and Video Council (BUFVC). The Moving Image Gateway collects details of websites that relate to moving images and sound and their use in higher and further education as teaching/learning resources. The sites are classified and evaluated under four main categories: Arts and Sciences, Bio-Medical, Social Sciences and Science and Technology.
Online Journals Directory
Site alphabetically lists film journals available online. More comprehensive than 'Film Journals' site, but information provided varies in terms of full text for current and back issues. For access to some back copies, users need to subscribe.
ScreenSite
ScreenSite facilitates the teaching and research of film/TV/new media and is designed principally for educators and students. Sponsored by the University of Alabama et al, site is dedicated to collecting links and resources concerned with the study of film. Also offers interactive discussions onsite. Divided into various areas including Education, Research, Production and Publications. Also has Forum and FAQ sections. US focused.
Simile
Site of Simile – Studies in Media and Information Literacy Education. An e-journal which is directed at media teachers, teacher-librarians and information professionals who aim to improve media literacy. Published by University of Toronto Press, the first issue is Feb.2001. Full-text articles online concentrate on innovative ways to communicate media awareness to students and general public.
Spark Notes
Site of various multifaceted study guides of prominent films which can be downloaded for free. The Guides are listed alphabetically, include the Godfather Trilogy, Birth of a Nation and The Matrix and each is aligned to a message board. A contents list for each guide is provided and covers 'Context', 'Plot Overview', 'Theme' and 'Analysis of Major Characters'. Site also offers suggestions for further study, a FAQ section, an option to purchase study publications and online tests on the texts lists.

Teachit provides free teaching materials for English and Media teachers and is ‘the biggest and most popular web resource for English teachers’. Offers free classroom materials. Users need access to Acrobat Reader to access information. Media section covers various areas including advertising, film trailers, genre, individual film titles, and TV series. Also holds comments by teachers and press on the site and its materials.

A TV channel for school teachers. Programmes take place in schools across the country and observe teachers at work. Channel also contains discussion and documentaries on education.
Video Library - Richmond College
Site of Video Library for outside users, based at Richmond upon Thames College in London. Aimed at schools and colleges which have an ERA license. Once users subscribe they can access videos of off-air recordings. Users can search by title, or series or keyword, eg Shakespeare, study skills; then contact the college by fax, phone or email to hire material. Useful resource.
