Film-Philosophy is both an online publication specialising in book review articles and an email discussion salon. The sites has members from over 20 countries. Contains bibliographies, writings and relevant links.

Find Articles

Site comprises a vast archive of published articles dating back to 1998 from more than 300 magazines and journals. Articles are in full text and can be printed for free. Search options are either by name of publication or by subject, eg film. Once a title has been selected, each can be searched by topic and users select from the retrieved list of annotated references. Film journals include Film Comment, Film Quartlerly, Variety and Historical Journal and Film, Radio and Television.

Framework

Framework emerged in the early 70's as an in-depth academic journal, focusing on the British film sector in relation to the wider culture. Stopped publishing in 1992, but relaunched as online magazine in 1999 with an agenda to 'provide a platform for new developments in cinema and media from around the world'. Headline and limited article content available for free, but users will need to subscribe for full stories. Information is updated continually and box office grosses are made available every Sunday. Areas covered include film, TV, international news, business and marketing.

Images - Journal of Film and Popular Culture

Magazine site for in-depth, analytical articles on wide ranging film topics covering all of cinema history. Also included are current reviews, archive of previous features/ reviews and option to provide reviews etc. Site includes many images and aims to increase the understanding of 'movies and popular culture because through better understanding comes increased appreciation'.

Scottish based online film 'zine with interviews, features a useful if selective list of film reviews from recent years, plus DVD and video reviews. Other sections include a newsletter, details of imminent film releases and links to UK/international film festivals.

Their aim is to provide intelligent and well-written features and reviews on a site that is easily accessed and updated regularly. Contains reviews, features, interviews and a search facility.

Millenium Film Journal Index

Since 1978 the Millennium Film Journal has published articles about independent, experimental, and avant-garde cinema, video, and, more recently, works that use the newer technologies. This site provides an index to all issues, searchable by filmmaker and author as well as detailing the main themes of each issue.

MovieMaker

MovieMaker is a US based online and print magazine which focuses on 'the art and business of making movies.' Site contains extensive US festival links; featured articles from the print version with a searchable archive; and searchable 'hands-on' articles that look at screenwriting, directing, cinematography, editing, film festivals and more.

Screen

Oxford based academic journal of film and television studies covering both contemporary and historical topics. Quarterly issues include scholarly essays, reports, debates and book reviews. Articles' long abstracts are free to view, while their full text is only available to subscriber.

Screen Digest

Screen Digest is a monthly business media news letter covering the global markets of film, video, television and multimedia. Established in 1972, the publication is read by senior media executives in over 40 countries.

Screening the Past

Screening the Past is an ‘international, refereed, electronic journal of visual media and history.’ Journal can be searched by issue (current, recent, or archive) as well as section, title, author, and keyword. Articles are in the most written by academics and filmmakers. Website contains submission guidelines and details the refereeing process.

A quarterly online magazine based in Australia devoted to 'the serious and eclectic discussion of cinema' with an international perspective. Includes various critical approaches: auterist, formalist, etc. Site holds a useful extensive database on 'Great Directors' which includes a detailed essay, filmography and bibliography on each. Variety

Holds box office information on current top 60 US films and current news and reviews. Also provides a subscription service - Variety Extra - which holds a unique box office database for more than five years of weekly box office charts, plus a reviews and credits database which contains more than 11,000 original Variety film reviews.

Vertigo Magazine

Site gives access to online edition and information about print editions of Vertigo Magazine, which "champions innovation and diversity in form and culture for independent film and the moving image."

The Village Voice

New York magazine The Village Voice prides itself on its 'no-holds barred reporting and criticism'. The site does not have an index of its archived film reviews, but it does feature current release reviews and an 'article search' option to search the archive for past reviews and film-related articles.
