Search tips
There are two ways in which you can find a site using the Film Links Gateway.
Browsing
FLG has an extensive tree of categories and subcategories. By clicking on a main category heading, relevant subcategory headings appear. In these subcategories you can find specific types of sites.
For example
The Directories and Databases category contains sites which provide directories and databases of many different kinds. One of its subcategories, Industry contains sites which contain directories or databases related to the film and television industry. Industry itself has several subcategories:
- Companies
- Cast
- Crew/professional
- Distributors
- Jobs/Recruitment
- Locations
each relating to a different part of the industry. By browsing down the tree of categories and subcategories, you can find sites which more and more specifically address individual aspects of film and television.
Searching by Keyword
Yet many sites today are multifaceted, and it is often misleading to list them only under one heading. By using the search, you can access sites listed across many subcategories
For example
Search on 'British': selection of sites retrieved
- Department of Culture, Media and Sport
- British Academy of Film and TV Arts
- British Board of Film Classification
- Brit Movie (Database of British films)
- British Pathe
- Directory of British Filmmakers
- Framework (Online journal)
Searches on the Film Links Gateway are simple pattern matches: A search for 'film' will match 'film', 'films' and 'filming'.
Searches return two kinds of results: Category results, where your search term matches the name of a a category, and Site results, where your search term matches the name of a site or its description. Category results are more useful if you're looking for general information (see browsing, above); Site results are more useful if you're looking for an individual site.
Sites included in Film Links Gateway
Unlike search engines which aim to be comprehensive, Film Links Gateway is intentionally a selected database of websites which we constant check and update. We have focused on sites which provide free information, are educational, do not require subscriptions and will assist the media enthusiast, the occasional film goer, the industry and the academic community.
