Katrin Cartlidge died in 2002, aged just 41. She had appeared in Brookside before going on to work with Mike Leigh on Naked (1993) and Lars von Trier (Breaking the Waves, 1996), as well as working in the theatre with such colleagues as Nick Ward, David Edgar, Steven Berkoff and Simon McBurney, and on radio with John Berger. She collaborated with often little-known film-makers on a number of difficult, uncommercial and socially-aware projects, but as well as being a gifted actress of searing honesty and integrity in her depiction of emotionally complex characters, Katrin was also a writer, painter and photographer, and might have moved into film direction had she lived. Her archive gives us a vivid picture of a talented and multi-faceted performer and the world in which she moved.
