Special Collections: Researcher in Focus
Many distinguished academics and film historians use BFI Special Collections. On the following pages some of our researchers tell us a little about their projects.
Charles Barr(Summer 2010)
Charles Barr is Visiting Professor at University College Dublin. He is well-known for his pioneering work on British cinema including the books Ealing Studios and English Hitchcock. He is currently researching the Michael Balcon, Ivor Montagu and Adrian Brunel papers for a variety of projects including 'Hitchcock in Ireland'.
Tim Dolin (Winter 2009)
Tim Dolin is Associate Professor in the School of Media, Culture and Creative Arts at Curtin University in Perth. He is currently engaged in a research project on the contested meanings and uses of Thomas Hardy's Wessex since Hardy's death in 1928. It includes a chapter on John Schlesinger's Far from the Madding Crowd.
Jill Nelmes (Autumn 2009)
Jill Nelmes is a writer and academic. She is the editor of the Journal of Screenwriting and is currently working on two books, one on writing creative screenplays, the other on British screenwriters.
Natalya Kusel (Summer 2009)
Natalya Kusel is a third year student at Queen Mary University, London. She is researching the Joseph Losey collection for her dissertation on his unrealised film, À la Recherche du Temps Perdu.
Steven Gregory (Summer 2004)
Steven Gregory is a second year full time research student within the Department of Drama: Theatre, Film and Television at the University of Bristol. He is currently researching the Joseph Losey Collection.
Lez Cooke (Autumn 2004)
In addition to researching and writing a book on Troy Kennedy Martin, Lez Cooke is currently engaged in a three-year research project on regional British television drama at Manchester Metropolitan University.
John Coldstream (Autumn 2003)
John Coldstream, a former 'researcher in focus', is now working on a selection of Dirk Bogarde's letters, for publication by Weidenfeld and Nicolson. John Coldstream has recently published the official biography of the late Dirk Bogarde and was formerly the literary editor of the Daily Telegraph.
Philip Horne (Summer 2003)
Philip Horne is Professor of English at University College London. He was researching Thorold Dickinson for an academic conference to commemorate the centenary of Dickinson's birth in 1903.
