Black History Month

The bfi National Library celebrates Black History Month with a special display until Friday 5 November 2004.

Still: Pressure

Pressure (1975) by Horace Ov

The display in our reading room showcases the best and most recently-published books we hold on Black culture and includes Black-British, African and African-American titles. Black people's impact on film, television, music and global media is covered, from the early twentieth century to the present day.

There is also a display of colourful contemporary pressbooks advertising selected films that are landmarks in Black film-making, including Pressure (the first Black British feature film), Burning and Illusion, Menace II Society and Boyz N The Hood. For the final week (1-5 November), the display will concentrate on the work of Issac Julien, Ousmane Sembene and Spike Lee.

Please visit to sample what the library has to offer - the display is only a small selection of what we hold.
