Horror

There is a strange phenomenon we humans all share. A peculiar desire to be scared. Whether it be hurtling around at 100 m.p.h. on a roller coaster, telling ghost stories round an open fire in the dead of night, or simply turning the pages of a scary book, there is something about the rising heartbeat, sweaty palms and fear of "death" that intrigues and fascinates us. So it's no wonder that all through cinema history, directors have delighted us with an array of horror films, and the horror genre itself is one of the broadest and complex areas of film theory.

Here you'll find an annotated resource guide to the horror genre, ranging from the highly analytical, such as Barbara Creed's Monstrous Feminine, to the lighter offerings from Stephen King and Christopher Holden. All take horror as their starting point and expand on specific areas and films, sometimes surprising the reader by what can actually be called a horror movie.
