16+ source guides: Iranian Cinema

Iranian Cinema

The cinema of Iran has been "discovered" by the West thanks mainly to the acclaim bestowed upon a few major film-makers at festivals. For many students from the West studying these films is quite tough, because documentation is often scarce and prints and videos are not always subtitled. There are issues too about the way the films are made, because financial, religious, social and political constraints all affect the work of the Iranian director: we have tried to cover some whose work has been successful within Iran, some whose success has only been gained outside their home country and those who choose (or have to) work in exile. We have tried to smooth the path towards understanding what is a quite distinct cinematic language.
