Although the UK sometimes has difficulty deciding how 'European' it is, there has never been any doubt about the importance of European cinema. There are really as many national cinemas as there are countries. In order to make things a bit easier, we have focused on the 1990s for most of this guide, looking at a number of national cinemas, at aspects of the industry, and of government and EU involvement in different countries. We have also looked at the influence of (or perhaps the reaction to) Hollywood product, as well as the success or otherwise of European festivals in comparison with the Academy Awards.
