Amy Sargeant

Amy Sargeant has made extensive use of BFI archives for a range of research projects: of BFI National Archive holdings for British Cinema: A Critical History (2005) and of the library stocks of screenplays and journals for work on Sinclair Hill's 1927 A Woman Redeemed. The 2007 companion to Storm over Asia made use of the Ivor Montagu and Film Society archives in Special Collections while Michael Balcon material has been used, most recently, for work on Stephen Courtauld and Alexander Mackendrick's 1951 The Man in the White Suit. However, for this Researcher's Tale the discussion will focus on a variety of sources consulted for The Servant (Joseph Losey, 1963), an analysis of which has recently been published in the BFI Film Classics series.

Amy Sargeant teaches film studies for Tisch School of the Arts, NYU, and has written widely on British, European and Russian cinemas and cultural exchange. The Servant (2011) builds on her previous industrial experience as set designer and art director.
