Film on the Square

Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist

A sweetly funny story of two young people thrown together during the course of one New York night, as they search for their favourite band's secret gig.

A sweetly funny story of two young people thrown together during the course of one New York night, based on the successful late teen novel by David Leviathan and Rachel Conn. Nick O'Leary (Michael Cera) is the straight and 'straight edge' bass player in gay indie band The Jerkoffs, who can't get over his nasty ex-girlfriend. Norah Silverberg (Kat Dennings) is a smart, complicated music obsessive, wondering what to do when she leaves high school. A cute encounter at a gig paves the way for a night of adventures good and bad, as they head off in search of a secret performance by their favourite band.

As his earlier Raising Victor Vargas demonstrated, director Peter Sollett has a knack for filming the lives of New York youngsters with credibility and wit, and he's helped here by the adorable performances of Cera and Dennings, whose onscreen chemistry is a joy to watch. Making great use of its Manhattan locations, and with a soundtrack featuring the likes of Band of Horses, Modest Mouse and Vampire Weekend, this is a treat of a film for anyone who's ever tried to woo someone with a mix tape or cd. So, pretty much all of us then…
