Alan Bennett On Stage

This very special event treated BFI Southbank to an audience with the great wit and wisdom that is Alan Bennett. Born in Leeds, Bennett started as an actor, gaining instant fame after performing at the Edinburgh Festival in Beyond the Fringe. In 1968, his first play Forty Years On was produced with Patrick Garland directing, and since that time he has gone on to write an extensive number of plays both for the stage and TV, and act in a number of productions. Here he discusses how he goes about writing real lives into a fictional story, whether any of his characters resemble him, and the influence his past has had on his work.
