From Casablanca to Calais: Exile on Celluloid

In celebration of Refugee week, BFI Southbank hosted a riveting and informative discussion centered on the portrayal of exiles within cinema. Chair Samira Ahmed, Channel 4 News broadcaster, is joined on stage by directors Stephen Frears, Mat Whitecross and Kenny Glenaan, as well as Professor Terence Wright of Ulster University. Looking at various films, including a number by the panelists themselves, they consider the current representation of refugees within the media, including reassessing cinematic works not commonly understood to refer to those in exile.
